Following consultation undertaken by Cambridge Sport Network, the Sports Development Service are working to support the local sports associations to develop the 'Skills 4 Sport' clubs in the city.
Skills 4 Sport is an initiative that aims to address the following issues identified:
- Many sports clubs are at capacity
- Many sports coaches are at capacity
- There is a shortage of volunteers for sport
- There are limited school club links established
- Lack of “community” clubs for recreational sport
- Limited opportunities for 5 - 8 year olds, 12 - 15 years and adults
Skills 4 sport as a project encompasses many ideas around the development of 'skills'.
Activities aimed at the 5 - 8 year olds will focus on multi 'skills' and fundamentals of movement. Sessions will focus on the development of non sports specific activity based around agility, balance, coordination and the introduction of fundamental sport skills such as throwing, catching, running, jumping and striking.
Sessions organised for the 12 - 15 year olds will be in a sport specific coaching centre environment and will focus on developing sports 'skills' through structured sport specific coaching.
The sessions for adults will focus on three areas these being:
- Back to sport – enabling opportunity to take part in sport again.
- Family sport – providing opportunities for families to take part in sport together.
- Back to coaching scheme – which aims to target ex players or coaches and encourage them to return to coaching through gaining qualifications and volunteering opportunities.
The skills 4 sport clubs will be at the following venues:
North – Manor Sports Centre and Chesterton
Sports Centre
East – St Bedes Sports Centre
South – Netherhall
Sports Centre
West – The Leys Sports Centre
Information will be advertised through the local area sports association, the Sports Development Service, Schools, Community Centres etc.
The Skills 4 Sport programme is initially working with the following sports:
- Cricket
- Tennis
- Hockey
- Badminton
- Rugby
- Volleyball
